All of the sessions that I do are special because they are unique to each individual and family that comes to me. This session however was extra special because it was Ryland’s family. For those who have followed along on Facebook for over the past year, you may have seen brief mention of Ryland. A lot of his story I kept private simply because sharing with the world did not seem right. Now though, in order to truly understand why this session is so special, you need to know about Ryland. 🙂 He is the son of our good friends and passed away last October from an inoperable/incurable brain tumor. It was a devastating loss that no amount of time could have prepared any of us for. We were lucky though in that after his diagnosis in 2011, we were given just over a year with him, which was longer than the doctors predicted. :*) A year that taught us all how love more deeply and to truly appreciate time spent with those we care most about.
Right around the time of Ryland’s passing in October, his mom found out she was expecting again. The new baby was due right around Ryland’s June birthday…This fact alone left me in wonder and when they found out they were expecting another boy, I just could not help but feel that a small bit of Ryland was coming back to us in this new baby’s life. When Jess was pregnant with Ryland I photographed her each month as a progression and then we did a maternity session right before Ryland arrived. This time I live too far away for the monthly sessions, but there was no question about getting together for some maternity portraits. 🙂 There was much anticipation and excitement as well as some expected trepidation. If there is one thing I have learned though, nothing is certain in life and living in the moment is the most important thing you can do.
Enjoy these beautiful moments from this very special maternity portrait session. xoxo Kathleen
