Today is the birthday of two very special people in my life circle.
One of my closest friends and amazing photographer, Kelly, is celebrating today!! 🙂 Here she is with her husband, Ian, on our recent trip to New Orleans.
Happy Birthday Kelly!!!!
And this amazing woman, who unfortunately left this world this past Fall.
Nana Ruth was known for many things in this life. From a letter her granddaughter Kali wrote, “She was a caring and supportive mother, sister, nana and friend. She brought spunk, determination, intelligence, thoughtfulness, talent, and even a bit of stubbornness into our lives. She gave so many wonderful things to this world.” One of those wonderful things are the knitted gifts she made family and friends over the years. After Nana’s passing, Kali and her family contacted me with a unique request. They wanted portraits made of sweaters, specifically the sweaters that Nana had knit for them throughout her life. And so with their insight and location tips, we photographed 35 sweaters in various locations that had some tie and meaning to Nana’s life in Vermont. 35 sweaters out of dozens more! It was hard to narrow them down. Even harder to pick which 25 would be included in the final product of the project! Taking inspiration from “The Doors of…” posters, I created a “Handmade by Ruth” poster. The 24×36 poster has now been printed and distributed to each family member just in time to celebrate what would have been Nana’s 85th birthday today.
I hope you enjoy seeing the detail in some of these amazing sweaters. It is not often (unless you are a knitter) that we take the time and truly notice how much time, dedication, and love went into creating a beautiful sweater. I pulled some of my favorite images below for you to see them a bit larger. The lighting is a mix of natural light and artificial for those that are curious.
Happy Birthday Nana Ruth!
My dear sister was my assistant during the sweater shoot. She helped hold, pose, de-lint, and light the various sweaters. Thank you Rachel!
